All will now compete to win the overall Student Focus title and €35,000 worth of Sony digital imaging equipment for their university.

All student finalists will have their images exhibited at Somerset House, London, as part of the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition from 26 April - 12 May. The photographs will also be published in the 2013 edition of the annual Sony World Photography Awards book.

The finalists also receive a Sony 65 camera on which they will shoot a series of images exploring what the word ‘family’ means to them; the judges will select an overall winner from these images. All students will be flown to London by WPO to find out who has won the 2013 Student Focus title and €35,000 worth of Sony digital imaging equipment, when it is revealed at the glamorous Sony World Photography Awards Gala Ceremony on 25 April.

Following its inaugural Student Focus conference on photography education held at Photokina in October 2012, the World Photography Organisation and Sony are publishing a white paper on the future of the education of photography.

Written by Virginia Morrison, Executive Director, Society for Photography Education, USA, the white paper outlines a series of core competencies for students of photography, a key element missing from the current system of teaching. It also addresses photography curriculum, the need to think digitally and the making of and teaching of the art of photography.

The World Photography Organisation (WPO) has announced the countdown to the close of the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards, one of the world’s leading photographic awards programs.

There is just one month remaining for professional and amateur photographers from around the world to select and enter their best images of the year. Professional photographers will compete for the coveted title of L’Iris d’Or/Sony World Photography Awards Professional Photographer of the Year 2013, plus a $25,000 (USD) cash prize. Amateur photographers will contend the Open Photographer of the Year 2013 title, plus $5,000 (USD). All category winners across the awards will receive the latest digital imaging equipment from Sony.

Both winning and shortlisted photographers across the many competition categories receive worldwide recognition and exposure as a result of the awards.

All 2013 winning and finalist photographers will receive an exhibition of their work at Somerset House, one of London’s historical landmarks, from April - May 2013. They will also be featured across the WPO website and all winners, as well as a selection of shortlisted photographers, will be published in the annual Sony World Photography Awards hardcover book.

The deadline for entries for the ten Open categories, for amateurs and enthusiasts, is 4 January 2013. The Professional competition, with 15 categories for serious photographers, will close on 9 January 2013. All entries are free via WorldPhoto.Org. The shortlist will be revealed on 5 February 2013.

The 2013 Honorary Jury, who will judge the professional competition, is chaired by leading American agency director and newly appointed Magnum Foundation Director, Catherine Chermayeff. The panel comprises photography professionals from the World Photographic Academy including: travel photographer Macduff Everton; Guardian picture editor Fiona Shields; Magnum photographer Chien-Chi Chang and Director of the Moscow House of Photography, Olga Sviblova.

Lasso is a light, strong rope, usually with a smooth, hard finish, made of a fine quality of hemp or nylon. It is used primarily for catching large animals such as cattle and horses. The rope varies in length from 35 to 50 ft (11-15 m). At one end of the rope is a running knot or a metal ring by means of which a loop or noose is made. The loop is thrown, from as far away as 30 ft (9 m), around the horns or the feet of an animal and drawn tight. The lasso was invented by Native Americans. In the West United States and in parts of Latin America the lasso is a part of the equipment of a cattle herder. To use it on horseback requires great skill of the rider.
