Los Angeles — ‘The Shape of Water’ has won the best picture Oscar at the just concluded 90th Academy Awards. This Guillermo del Toro directorial defeated strong competition from ‘Get Out,’ ‘Lady Bird’ and ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.’

Here is the complete list of the winners:

Indian films have had little luck at the Oscars. This year’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category, “Newton”, a dark comedy set against the backdrop of elections in the world’s largest democracy, couldn’t even make it to the final five. Only three Indian films — “Mother India” (1957), “Salaam Bombay!” (1988) and “Lagaan” (2001) — have made it to the final five nominees of the Best Foreign Language film at the Academy Awards. None have got the award.

The 90th Oscars were held on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and were televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscars were also televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

After a suspenseful opening which saw his initial defeat, World No.1 Magnus Carlsen (Norway) found his groove and reclaimed his supremacy as Champion of World Open Blitz Chess. In the Women’s Championship, Georgian mother-of-two Nana Dzagnidze fulfilled her dream and snatched the gold with her stellar performance.

For the Rapid Chess category, Indian grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, fondly known as ‘The Tiger from Madras’, remained unbeaten against some of the highest IQs in the world and swiftly emerged as winner. LOS ANGELES, CA - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that nine features will advance to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category for the 90th Academy Awards. Ninety-two films had originally been considered in the category.

The films, listed in alphabetical order by country, are:

• Chile, “A Fantastic Woman,” Sebastián Lelio, director;

• Germany, “In the Fade,” Fatih Akin, director;

• Hungary, “On Body and Soul,” Ildikó Enyedi, director;

• Israel, “Foxtrot,” Samuel Maoz, director;

• Lebanon, “The Insult,” Ziad Doueiri, director;

• Russia, “Loveless,” Andrey Zvyagintsev, director;

• Senegal, “Félicité,” Alain Gomis, director;

• South Africa, “The Wound,” John Trengove, director;

• Sweden, “The Square,” Ruben Östlund, director.

Foreign Language Film nominations for 2017 are determined in two phases.

The Phase I committee, consisting of Los Angeles-based Academy members, screened the original submissions in the category between mid-October and December 11. The group’s top six choices, augmented by three additional selections voted by the Academy’s Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee, constitute the shortlist.

Academy members eligible to participate in the Nominations round of voting in New York, London, Los Angeles and, for the first time, the San Francisco Bay Area, will screen the nine shortlisted films in theaters over a three-day period from Friday, January 12, through Sunday, January 14, with three films screening each day. Additionally, international members will be invited to opt-in to stream the nine shortlisted films on the Academy’s member site. Members must see all nine films before casting their ballots.

Nominations for the 90th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2018.

The 90th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

Meanwhile, “Newton”, India’s official entry in the Best Foreign Language category for the 90th Academy Awards, is out of the Oscars race. Featuring Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi in key roles, the Hindi language film chronicles the foibles of democracy in the jungles of Chhattisgarh.

No Indian film has ever won an Oscar. The last Indian film that made it to the final five in the Best Foreign Film category list was Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan in 2001.

Mother India (1958) and Salaam Bombay (1989) are the other two Indian movies to have made it to the top five.
