Moscow, February 28, 2007 -- The average speed in the Russian capital during rush hour is rarely more than 6 km/h (4 mph). In order to improve flow and safety on the city's "Third ring" motorway, Siemens installed a comprehensive traffic control system. 94 detector systems record traffic densities, speeds and vehicle data. 75 video cameras observe traffic incidents and automatically recognize traffic jams and accidents. Four weather stations measure temperature, precipitation and visibility. A 45-km (28 mi.) high-speed fiber-optic communications system transmits the data to the central control computer for analysis, which is connected in turn to the three tunnel control centers and the traffic management control center for the city of Moscow. Hong Kong — Another strong men's and women's line-up has been announced for the fourth and final leg of The Standard Chartered Greatest Race on Earth (GROE) 2006/07, the Hong Kong Marathon, which will take place on 4 March. With teams separated by the tightest of margins after the previous races of the series in Nairobi, Singapore and Mumbai, the final marathon will determine how the largest prize pool in world athletics, US$1.5 million, is ultimately shared.
The Greatest Race on Earth (GROE) was created in 2004 - the first-ever virtual relay race across four marathons. The Main Team Challenge category is open to men and women over 18 years of age, of any nationality, with no restriction on the level of competence. Each team member will run in one marathon. Teams must nominate who will run in each full marathon before the start of the series, and the winning team will be the one whose athletes record the lowest aggregate time across the four marathons.
In 2005/06 the quality of the runners was world-class, with 24 male and 30 female GROE runners placing in the top 10 of each of the four marathons.
Building on the success of the first two series, Standard Chartered presents GROE for the third time. There are over 80 teams and 300 participants taking part. The race covers marathons in Nairobi, Singapore, Mumbai and Hong Kong, representing some of the most challenging environments in the world:
• The highest race at over 1,600 metres in Nairobi – 29 October 2006
• The island race around Singapore – 3 December 2006
• The historic race through Mumbai – 21 January 2007
• The harbour race across Hong Kong – 4 March 2007

The picture shows a group of young Lebanese driving through a South Beirut neighborhood devastated by Israeli bombings. The picture was taken on 15 August 2006, the first day of the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah when thousands of Lebanese started returning to their homes.

This year 4,460 professional photographers from 124 countries entered 78,083 images in the most prestigious annual international competition in press photography. The judging sessions took place in Amsterdam from 27 January to 8 February. The jury gave prizes in 10 theme categories to 58 photographers of 23 nationalities from: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Palestinian Territories, People’s Republic of China, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and the USA.

ATLANTA, Feb. 15 -- An enormous 'walking' mechanical elephant that was ridden by President Eisenhower at the 1952 Republican National Convention, plus a half-dozen rare vintage guitars - a 1959 Gibson Les Paul and five D-series Martins, collectively worth more than $1 million - will be sold the weekend of February 17-18 by Red Baron, the premier auction house in the Southeast.
The elephant - a colossus by any measure, at about 20 feet tall - was the brainchild of Frank Stuart, an English visionary and inventor who built three of the forward-propelled pachyderms in the years following World War II. One is permanently housed in a museum in Austria, one is in a private museum in Chicago, and the third (the one being sold) comes directly from the Stuart family.
The elephant 'walks' with the help of a four-cylinder, Chevy-powered engine and an elaborate network of hydraulics neatly tucked inside the body cavity. It literally skates along, at speeds of up to 20 mph, and has been featured over the years in publications like Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Forbes and Architectural Digest Motoring. It has also been in numerous parades and festivals.
Its crowning achievement came in 1952, when Dwight Eisenhower rode it to the Republican National Convention, in front of a horde of reporters, cameras and well-wishers. [GlobalGiants.com]

Over, embroidered 70s’ muslins, flowery tops that seem faded because they’re printed on the inside, fine-striped polo shirts. Trousers are still low-slung, though the crotch is higher. The legs will be up for bid on the popular auction site, eBay, from February 12th through February 21st with all proceeds benefiting The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency that has provided free summer vacations to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877.
In May 2006, Carey was honored as the first ever Venus "Celebrity Legs of a Goddess" at a Radio City Music Hall ceremony where she unveiled the 16' legs. The event marked the beginning of the 2006 Venus "Legs of a Goddess" contest -- an annual search for the woman with the best legs in America. Hundreds of women participated in the competition, which coincided with select concert dates on Ms. Carey's The Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, The Hits, The Tour.
Venus is one of the most successful female shaving brands. It belongs to Gillette/Procter & Gamble.

NEW YORK, Feb. 1 -- The Recording Academy(R) teamed up with Sony BMG Music Entertainment to release the 2007 GRAMMY(R) Nominees CD, which celebrates many of the year's GRAMMY-nominated artists and songs.

Scanning at more than 77,000 units this week -- this year's compilation has started off very strong with a #1 debut on the Billboard Top Compilation Albums and a #4 debut on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the CD will benefit the MusiCares Foundation(R) and the GRAMMY Foundation(R).
The disc contains many of the most widely recognized GRAMMY categories. The 23 tracks from the 2007 GRAMMY Nominees CD represent nominees from the Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Best New Artist, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals categories. The CD is made possible by a special arrangement with all of the major music distribution companies and rotates distributors from year to year.
The 49th Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on Feb. 11, 2007, at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, and will be broadcast in high-definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).
